We Are Connected – Building a More Connected Newham

Connection Starts with All of Us

Loneliness affects many people—but connection is something we can all help create. Whether you're feeling isolated or simply want to support others, being connected is everyone’s responsibility.

Every smile, every conversation, every shared moment helps build a stronger, kinder Newham. And the best part? Everyone has something to offer.

Ways to Make Connection Matter

Here are some simple ways to bring more connection into your day—and someone else’s:

  • Smile at someone new—it’s contagious
  • Pause for a quick chat instead of rushing past
  • Visit a neighbour—better yet, bring them a coffee
  • Organise a group walk or street picnic
  • Add loneliness to a work meeting agenda—raise awareness
  • Host a film night or community event
  • Meet a friend or colleague for lunch—face-to-face matters

Be Connected: A Community That Cares

If you or someone you know is feeling lonely, we are here to help. The Be Connected campaign supports residents experiencing chronic loneliness through personalised support and inclusive community activities.

We offer:

  • One-to-One Support: Up to six weeks of tailored support from Be Connected Officers to help residents build confidence, rediscover interests, and reconnect with others
  • Chatty Benches: Look out for signs at community locations inviting you to sit, meet, and talk outdoors
  • Men in Sheds: A welcoming space for men to connect, create, and converse through DIY and crafts
  • Community Coffee Mornings: Friendly, informal gatherings where residents can meet, chat, and build new connections over a warm drink

Real Stories from Newham Residents

Dave, Men in Sheds
“I retired for medical reasons and suddenly had nothing to do. You don’t realise it, but the depression creeps in. This place changed that. We laugh, we fix things, we talk—it’s that simple.”

Angela, Newham Volunteer
Angela joined Newham Volunteers after feeling isolated. Over the past year, she’s volunteered at tea dances, Christmas lunches, and community events. “Everyone really enjoyed themselves—great day. Lovely people.”

Helping Hands Charity
Residents who once felt excluded now help run a local community hub—cooking meals, gardening, and supporting others. “Helping Hands is about being there and fighting for each other.”

Volunteer Locally – Make a Difference

Volunteering is a powerful way to connect, give back, and grow. Whether you have an hour or a day, your time can make a real impact.

Reaching Out for Support

If you’ve felt lonely for a long time, even if you know people, it can be hard to take that first step. You don’t need to rush. Start small—try an online activity where you’re not expected to interact, or ask if you can observe a group before joining in. Sometimes, just being around others can help ease feelings of loneliness.
