What is the purpose of the timed road closure?
The timed road closure aims to make the roads near a school safer for children to walk and cycle, and restrict through traffic at drop-off and pick-up times. Less traffic in the area will also improve local air quality.
Newham has the worst air quality in the country with seven out of every 100 deaths being linked to dirty air and some of the highest asthma rates amongst the under 18s. We’ve already seen the successful reduction of dangerous air pollution on our first set of ‘Healthy School Streets’ with a 32% drop in nitrogen dioxide in the morning and 16% drop in the afternoon.
