School admission appeals

If you apply for a place for your child at a state-funded school, and the application is refused, you can appeal that decision.

Normally you can only appeal for entry to the same school once each academic year.

Before you appeal

Before you decide whether to appeal, think about:
  • the rules of entry for the school you want your child to go to
  • your medical, philosophical, religious and social reasons for wanting your child to go to the school
  • your child's view on which school they should go to
  • how strong your case is.
If you still wish to appeal, make sure you read the relevant guidance document before you apply:
Guide to primary school admission appeals (PDF)
Guide to secondary school admission appeals (PDF)

Supporting documents

When you fill in the form you will be asked to upload any extra information that could support your appeal. This can include Word, PDF or JPEG files.

What happens after you submit your appeal

The Newham Independent School Appeals Service (NISAS) will send you an email with a reference number to confirm that you have submitted your appeal.

At least ten school days before the hearing, NISAS will tell you the exact date, time and place of your hearing. They will also send you more information about the appeals process, which you should read before your hearing.

Your appeal will be heard within 30 school days of us receiving your application.

Your appeal hearing

An independent panel will hear your appeal. Find out more about how the panel works on the Government’s website.

If your child has a statement of special educational needs (SEN), you can appeal to the special needs tribunal instead. Contact our SEN Team for more information.

The panel hears all appeals between 9am and 6pm at Newham Dockside or Newham Town Hall, East Ham.

Who can go to the hearing

You can take a family member or friend with you to the hearing. You can also bring someone to represent (speak for) you.

If you cannot go to the hearing you must tell NISAS whether you will be sending someone to represent you or whether you want the case to be decided on your written evidence alone (that is to say on your appeal form and any supporting documents).

Appeal panel volunteers

Are you interested in education provision and keen to support your local community?

Parents/guardians have the right to appeal against the decision of the
admission authority when their child is not allocated a place at a school of
their choice. We are currently recruiting people to sit on these hearing panels.

We are looking for people from a range of backgrounds. You do not need any particular qualifications or to be involved in the education sector, but you will need to be:
  • articulate
  • non-judgemental
  • able to make rational and reasonable decisions
  • community focused and keen to participate in a voluntary non-paid role (a fixed rate of £35 per day is paid to cover expenses)
  • able to attend a full day of training.
All panel members are required to undertake a DBS check and may be required to attend a short informal interview.

For more information and to apply: Visit www.gov.uk/government/publications/school-admissions-appeals-code
Call Kash Dar on 020 3373 1538.

Applications must be received by Monday 20 November and interviews, if necessary, will be held from this date onwards. You must be available to attend the training day on Monday 4 December.
