Small Business Saturday
Small businesses across the borough are gearing up for Small Business Saturday.
What is Small Business Saturday?
This annual UK-wide campaign celebrates and promotes the importance of supporting small businesses.
Taking place on the first Saturday of December, this year’s event falls on 7 December, marking the start of the peak festive shopping season.
As a grassroots, not-for-profit initiative, Small Business Saturday inspires people nationwide to champion local businesses—not just on the day but all year round, highlighting the best of small, independent businesses, from high street shops and market traders to small online retailers.
How are we celebrating?
This year’s theme for Small Business Saturday is ‘Small Business – Big Community’
We want to celebrate the amazing small businesses in Newham that make such a valuable contribution to our wonderful, vibrant, big community.
This includes our Market Village traders who faced significant challenges earlier this year. We continue our commitment to supporting over 60 local businesses and 100 workers impacted by the sudden closure.
The traders like many businesses continue to face challenges against the backdrop of spiralling prices and the pressure of the rising cost of living, this is an opportunity to spotlight the traders at the market village and throughout Newham and encourage residents to shop locally and demonstrate what ‘Small Business – Big Community’ can create.
"We all stuck together, all the traders here stuck together. it was lovely - a big surprise. People have missed us so much.” The Central Cafe - Angie

“Small Business Saturday is all about supporting and celebrating the UK’s fantastic small businesses and the amazing contribution they make to our local communities, as well as wider society and the economy.”
“After a particularly difficult period for small business owners, public support can make all the difference to help our small firms and local communities thrive. It’s important that we throw our support behind them on Small Business Saturday and beyond.” - Michelle Ovens CBE, Director, Small Business Saturday UK:

Small Business Saturday (SBS) is a non-commercial campaign celebrating small businesses and encouraging residents to shop local. This year’s theme, Small Business – Big Community, highlights the vital role of community support. Taking place on Saturday, 7 December, the campaign aims to create a lasting impact by promoting local spending, which drives economic growth and community resilience.
This was showcased earlier this year when the Market Village in Stratford, supported by traders, the community, the Mayor, and Council staff, safeguarded over 100 jobs and this local cultural heritage. Small businesses are the backbone of the local economy, acting as community hubs and providing strength during challenging times.
"We all stuck together, all the traders here stuck together. It was lovely - a big surprise. People have missed us so much.” The Central Cafe - Angie
We encourage local businesses to join the campaign by signing up for the Small Business Finder and using the Marketing Pack through their My Small Business portal. Shoppers are encouraged to support local businesses throughout the festive season and beyond.
