Equalities impact assessments

What are equality impact assessments

Public Sector Equality Duty

As a Public Body, Newham Council has a duty to groups identified in the Equalities Act 2010 as 'protected characteristics'.

This duty is called the Public Sector Equality Duty and requires us to give 'due regard' in all our relevant work to:

  1. Eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation and other conduct prohibited by the Act.
  2. Advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not.
  3. Foster good relations between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not.

To meet our Public Sector Equality Duty, Newham Council uses equality impact assessments, a standard method used by public bodies to demonstrate we are complying with this duty and giving 'due regard' by:

  • Identifying how different protected characteristic groups might be positively or negatively affected by a service or policy
  • Removing or minimising disadvantages experienced by people due to their protected characteristics.
  • Taking steps to meet the needs of people from protected groups where these are different from the needs of other people.
  • Encouraging people from protected groups to participate in public life or in other activities where their participation is disproportionately low.

How to access equality impact assessments

Equality impact assessments are made available to members of the public upon request. If you would like a copy of a specific equality impact assessment, including in relation to Budget decisions 23/24, please contact, eqia.info@newham.gov.uk.

You can also find copies of equality impact assessments related to decisions in our decision register and some older assessments at the bottom of this page.
