Business Rates

If your premises are affected by local disruption

You may get a temporary reduction in your business rates if your premises are affected by severe local disruption (like flooding, building or roadworks). You will need to contact the Valuation Office Agency (VOA) to apply for this, as this is not dealt with through the Local Authority.

You must continue to pay your business rates as demanded until a decision has been made by the VOA.

The Council has identified that some Rating Agents are actively targeting businesses in Newham to offer their service to help businesses get a rate reduction. These Agents operate by asking rate-paying businesses to sign up for their service on the basis that they can get them relief on their business rates. If their application is successful then the Agent may charge the business up to 50% of the relief over a 2 - 3 year period. Whilst this kind of practice is not illegal, it is misleading as all ratepayers can seek advice directly from the VOA or our Business Rates team.

If you claim Business Rates relief directly with the VOA and your application is successful then you will be able to keep 100% of any savings identified. Therefore, we recommend that you avoid using third-party Rating Agents and deal directly with the VOA and our Business Rates team.
