Reasons why Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs) are issued

Bus Lane Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) contravention codes

Bus Lane Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs) are issued for the following contravention. A contravention is when a parking or driving rule has been breached.

National driving and parking guidance and rules can be found in The Highway Code, including images and examples of the different road signs and lines.

34 - Being in a bus lane.
A contravention occurs when a vehicle, other than a bus, is driven in a bus lane during its restricted hours of operation. These hours are clearly displayed on large blue signs at the start of each bus lane. While taxis, pedal cycles, and motorcycles are permitted to use some bus lanes, this does not apply to all locations. Motorists are therefore advised to always check the roadside signs at the location for specific restrictions.

Exemptions apply for emergency service vehicles, such as marked Police, Ambulance, and Fire Brigade vehicles.

When turning left into a side road, motorists must wait until they see the ‘End of Bus Lane’ sign or a break in the bus lane road markings before making the manoeuvre. Driving in a bus lane before reaching the sign or break in the road will result in the issue of a PCN.
