Truancy is when your child misses school on a regular basis for no good reason. It is also called ‘unauthorised absence’.

Attending school

You must make sure your child gets a full-time education that meets their needs, for example, if they have special educational needs.

By law, all children who are registered at school must attend regularly.

If your child is missing from school and we think you are not giving them home schooling, we or the school will contact you even if your child is only missing for a day.

Helping your child go to school

We work with parents and schools to make sure children attend school regularly and on time. We also offer support to:

  • to help them overcome the difficulties which prevent children and young people from attending school regularly
  • make home visits and arrange appointments at school or our offices
  • refer them to another service, if extra support is needed.
