Development management

Newham is a focus for investment and growth because of unique opportunities for development and excellent transport links.

We make planning decisions for all types of development, from a small house extension to a major housing development.

How we manage development

You need planning permission for a range of building work, including quite small changes which may affect the look or use of buildings.
We are here to help you:
We also offer information and advice on:
  • conservation areas and listed buildings in Newham
  • tree preservation orders
  • historic and scheduled ancient monuments
  • urban design.

Development management: service and performance

The Government assesses us on how quickly we decide planning applications.
We have to decide:
  • 60 per cent of all major planning applications within 13 weeks
  • 65 per cent of all minor planning applications within eight weeks
  • 80 per cent of all other planning applications within eight weeks.
Every three months the Government publishes statistics about the number of planning applications made and planning permissions granted in England. Find out how we perform compared with other councils.

We always aim to offer a good service for all our customers. However, if you are dissatisfied with the service you receive you can complain using our Complaints and compliments page.
